This past week I saw a few great performances…
On Thursday night I went to Hillel’s midnight bagel brunch and it was a special acapella night too. Tilton Hall was packed with people to see the different acapella groups perform, one being the awesome Clark Bars! They put on a really great show performing songs like Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know”, Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy”, and Led Zeppelin’s “Fool in the Rain”. I was just so amazed at what they could do with their voices. After they sang, we all had bagels and juice in the typical Hillel tradition on campus.
On Friday, me and a few other students on campus took part in a national unified action against banks funding the coal industry in collaboration with Rainforest Action Network. We went to a local bank branch, handed out fliers, and talked to people about how Bank of America and CitiBank are investing millions of dollars in the coal industry, which is one of the leading sources carbon dioxide emissions and causes of global warming.
On Friday night I had another dinner with my suite, but this time I was the cook! I made vegan mac n’ cheeze and a ficken (fake chicken) stir fry! I think it came out pretty delicious.
Saturday I worked from 12-6 at Sano Cafe (kind of a long day). But then that night I went to the Woo Dance to see my suitemates perform! A few dance groups on campus threw the event to raise money for some of their dancers to go dance in the Orange Bowl in Miami this winter. I got to see performances by a Worcester step team and Dance Society, but there were also performances by Hip Hop Collabo and Variant Dance Troupe.
After the Woo Dance, I ran over to St. Peter’s church to catch my friend Steph in the Concert Choir Fall Concert. It was pretty awesome. I couldn’t believe how many people were in the choir; it was my first time seeing them! They sounded beautiful!
On Sunday I joined a couple of my friends at Food Not Bombs. It was my first time going, but they usually go every Sunday to help cook and serve food to Worcester residents who may not have access to a warm meal. The goal of Food Not Bombs is to provide a free community meal in a public venue weekly and to reclaim spaces for a safe community use. We met up at Stone Soup, a local artist/activist collective and community resource center that’s just a short walk down Main Street from Clark. We prepared food for 2 hours and then went to a lot on Main Street to serve it to anyone who wanted a good free meal. It was a really great experience to feel a sense of community and I hope to keep going on Sundays.
Later on Sunday I met with my Sustainable University group and we walked around campus conducting a bike rack inventory. We are trying to get more bike racks put on campus so more students can have a safe place to lock up their bikes and hopefully more people will bring and use their bikes!
