IA Bazaar

Today is the university preview day as well as the IA bazaar ( a students’ arts and crafts sales event) day. My friend, Ruby, rent half of a table to sell handmade red bean Mochi and Pastry. Mochi is a traditional Japanese dessert with glutinous rice paste outside and sweet stuffing inside. The flavors of Mochi stuffing can be red bean, green tea, lotus root, coffee, etc. I went to Ruby’s suite to help her make Mochi in the morning. We used steamed red bean as stuffing, and shaped the dough into heart, star and bear shapes. The dough was so sticky that it was hard to knead. Ruby is professional doing that process, while I could only help with shaping Mochi.  It took us the whole morning to make Mochi, but we had fun. We made about 50 Mochis and a plate full of red bean pastries.

The tables of IA bazaar were located on the green near University Center. The weather was good since it was sunny outside, though a little bit chilly. Most of the tables had already been set up when we got to the green. Some girls were selling bracelets and handmade earrings. Our IA president Bjoern was selling knitted gloves made by his mom. Matt was shaping balloons into all kinds of hats. I got a blue and red bow-knot one. Also, there were other students who were tabling for their own art works and foods. After walking around all the tables, we came back to set up ours. Ruby set the price for both Mochi and pastry at 50 cents each. The business went well. It was pleasant to see people enjoy our desserts. We also had some good conversations with prospective students and their parents. One girl, who showed interest in Asian languages and cultures, said she would like to study Japanese. Ruby’s Mochi and Pastry business turned out to be a great success, so was our IA Bazaar. It was the first event organized by Initial Advantage this semester. We will have several more event in the following weeks, such as the I&E (Innovation and Entrepreneurship) department monthly dinner with our guest AJ Vaynerchuk, who will talk about social media and how he has started the website www.pleasedress.me. If you are interested in knowing more about AJ, please check out www.ajvaynerchuk.com. If you are interested in I&E monthly dinner, which is open to all Clark students, fell free to email me for more details.
