New England is the earliest developed area in US, there are many historical cities here. Amony them is Newport, the oldest city in Rhode Island. Newport was founded in 1639 by English settlers, and famous for its beautiful harbor and grand mansions located along the seashore. My dad has showed me pictures, but I haven’t had a chance to go there before this weekend. I went on a trip to Newport with the “New England excursions” organized by student council on Saturday. New England excursion is a series of trips to places of interest in the Neighboring areas, to name a few, Day on Cape with Whale Watch, Day in Salem, and Day in New York City. It was about 1 hour and a half’s drive to Newport. The weather was not ideal, but luckily, it didnt rain heavily as forecasted. Walking around the small shops along the harbor and the famous “cliff walk” was great fun, but in different ways. The sea in a foggy weather looked like a shy girl whispering the history of the city. The city gave me a tranquil and elegant feel, which could help people wipe off business and pressure from work. I didn’t have time to go on the Mansion tour, but people who went all gave positive feedback. I hope I could come to Newport again and visit the Mansions.

Last Tuesday was the election day. Everyone was watching the polling on Tuesday night, and when the result came out, you can hear screamings from all over the campus. Since Massachusettes is a very “democratic” state, most people here are big Obama supporters. There were a huge crowd in the dining hall watching the polling together and enjoying some fun games. It was such an exciting and historical moment when Obama won at around 11pm. Though McCain lost, i think he lost graciously. Since I am from China and we don’t have the same presidential election system, this is the first time I watched the whole process of electing a president in US. Even though I could not vote, I was extraordinarily inspired by the spirit and passion of the candidates and their supporters.
