Inauguration Day and Happy Year of the Ox!

Hi everybody,

This was a good and laid back week.  A few out of the ordinary things happened: intramural basketball started, the Year of the Ox was celebrated and a U.S President was inaugurated.

On Tuesday, when President Obama took the oath, I was in French class, where the Professor tried to show the live feed from PBS’s website.  Unfortunately, there was so much bandwith being used, that most of us didn’t see him get inaugurated until after class.  Either way, it was a festive atmosphere on campus.  In the new Academic Commons, there was a big video projector set up and a decent sized crowd gathered to watch it there.  Also, in Dana Commons, there was food and another big projector set up.  I watched some of the parade there later in the afternoon.  Here’s information from Clark’s website about the Inauguration: www.clarku.edu/micro/uselection08/index.cfm .  I woke up early on Wednesday to grab a copy of the New York Times with special coverage of the previous day’s events.  Hopefully I can hold onto it for a few decades and look back fondly.

On Friday, there was a special Inaugural Ball held in Tilton Hall by the Democrats of Clark University (DCU).  They had a DJ, food, and a chance to pose with Barack Obama!

On Saturday, there was a MAD Scholars retreat on campus, where we did some ice breakers and talked about goals for the semester.  We got to do an Egg Drop off of a wall with a few materials.  My group’s design with a parachute worked flawlessly.  At night I was on duty, so that was pretty low key.

Today, I played intramural basketball with a few other RAs.  Our team, the Documenters, did not win, but we all had a good time.  We played a bunch of Grad students who looked like they had practiced a lot, but we’ll get them next time.   Immediately following the game, I headed over to the Asian New Years Festival.  There was karaoke, different kinds of teas, foods, video games and presentations by Chinese language classes.  I was happy to see such a big crowd.  My friend taught me how to say “Happy New Year” in Mandarin, but I don’t know how to write it.

Have a great week,

Hey Jeremy!

Congrats on the egg drop design. Sounds like you may want to consider dropping the French major and going straight to Engineering!

Here’s to even more great experiences at Clark University!
