On Tuesday night, I went to the Kneller Athletic center for the men’s basketball “Cougar Pride” event. Each year the Cougar Pride Committee, a group consisting of members from Student Affairs and the Athletics Department, team up to create a sort of pep rally like atmosphere at the Kneller for an athletic event. This year they gave out free t-shirts to the first 100 fans to come to the game. The shirts had the Clark Basketball emblem on the front and then the words “Defend the Den” on the back. The game started at 7pm but because I had practice until 7, by the time I got to there all the t-shirts had already been given out!
The gym was absolutely packed with people. We were playing WPI, a cross-town rival, so they had a lot of fans too (but not half as many Clark did). It was a big game for Clark because WPI was undefeated in the NEWMAC conference and currently ranked 22nd in the country by D3hoops.com. It was such a big game that the local news channel decided to broadcast the game live. So not only was the gym packed with fans, but with camera crews and sports newscasters too.
Clark had a really strong first half, leading by as many as 16 points. But at the end of the half WPI had shortened the margin and the score was 41-31. Half-time is another important part of Cougar Pride because half-time is when a lucky few raffle ticket winners have the chance to win a major prize. Six raffle ticket winners are given the chance to win the prize if they make a half-court shot. My freshman year the prize was free tuition for a year, last year it was a car, and this year it was a huge flat-screen HD TV. One of the lucky six winners was my friend and softball teammate Chloe. Unfortunately she missed the shot along with the rest of the winners so no one went home with a new TV that night.
No one might have won the TV but Clark did end up winning the basketball game! The final score was 68-56 and was a HUGE win for Clark. They handed WPI their first conference lost and snapped their 8 game winning streak. Overall it was a really fun night and I can’t wait for the women’s basketball Cougar Pride event next week.
