Ice skating, Flora in Winter and more

Hi everybody,

This week was very busy and it went by quickly.  I’ve used the weekend to relax and recuperate, and do homework, of course.  Rather than give the whole play by play, only the choice events of the week will be mentioned.

Here are the highlights:

1.  Hillel Ice Skating.  Today about 20 Clarkies went ice skating with Clark Hillel at the Buffone Rink on Lake Ave. in Worcester.  It was a blast – two hours of open skating.  I haven’t gone ice skating in a while, so it was good to participate in a winter ritual, despite it being warm outside today.  Some of our group members had never gone skating before, so they all did a great job putting on their skates and trying it out.  Hopefully this will not be my last time skating this winter.

2.   Worcester Art Museum: Flora in Winter.  I volunteered at WAM’s annual Flora in Winter fundraiser event, accompanying tours and assembling calendars to hand out to patrons.  This event seemed unique and was unlike anything I had seen before.  To raise money, the Museum invites local florists to arrange flowers to match up with paintings on display in the museum.  The florists were very creative and had interesting interpretations of the artworks.  There was a big crowd on hand.  I used the Consortium shuttle to get to and from the Museum.

3.  Relevance of the Holocaust in Modern Europe lecture.  The Strasser Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies hosted a talk by the U.S. State Department’s Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues, Ambassador J. Christian Kennedy on Tuesday afternoon.  Ambassador Kennedy spoke about his work with communities in Poland, the Czech Republic and other nations on topics including restitution, education and combating antisemitism.  The room was packed and it was cool to hear from someone who works on such an important topic speak on campus.

4.  Open Gym.  Yesterday, I played basketball and soccer in the Kneller Athletic Center with a few friends.  We played for a couple of hours and were all tired after, but had a blast.  It was good to practice for our intramural team, who won a game thanks to our opponents not showing up one time.  The gym was full of other groups playing pick up basketball.  Also, there was a swim meet against Gordon College going on in the next room over.

5. RLH Group Process.  This yearly event is part of the Resident Advisor selection process. Candidates for RA positions come to the Jonas Clark building and perform various tasks, ranging from making up skits to putting puzzles together.  The purpose of the activity is to observe how people work together and judge candidates on how their work style would fit the role of an RA.  I saw some great team workers yesterday and look forward to them joining the RLH staff in the future.

Besides those events, I have been finishing my application to study abroad in France, working on organizing Just Do It Day, doing lots of school work and finding time to relax.  Any questions about Clark?

Have a great week,

Jeremy
