Hey everyone, it’s Nathalia from El Salvador. This is my first time writing for Clark Diaries and I have to say I’m really excited. As for you, I hope that through several of these posts you will be able to experience a bit of what being a true “clarkie” means.
Even though everyone seems to be stressing out with mid-terms this week, many things still have been going on around campus. As you already know I’m part of UNICEF CLUB at Clark so because of the typhoon in the Philippines, a tsunami in the Samoan Island and finally the devastating earthquake in Indonesia, UNICEF club decided to hold a “Disaster Relief Campaign”. We did this in order to raise awareness and funds to help the children in the affected areas. Tabling was so much fun; we had candy, colorful posters and hand-made bracelets to give out in exchange of donations. Regardless of being a short-notice campaign, UNICEF club raised much more than expected in a week. This means that Clark will contribute to helping save millions of lives through UNICEF. Moreover, this week we also held a screening of an educational movie called “Living Rights”. It talked about the struggling life stories of four different children, and it showed how UNICEF has improved their lives.
Even though Clark is recognized by its large sense of community involvement, my week was not all about trying to figure out how to save the world! This week the ISA (International Student Association) is hosting Clark’s World Cup for soccer at the Dolan Field House. Students started to prepare for the tournament and the resulting teams were: Europe, East Asia, Caribbean, Latin America, North America and South Asia. LASO (Latin American Student Association) decided to participate for the first time in its history and supported the Latin American Team at the soccer matches.
I was really excited because soccer games are so much fun especially if you know the people who you’re playing with. People seemed to be so enthusiastic about the soccer tournament that together with all the other LASO members we decided to make fun red and yellow posters and some other interesting cheers to help encourage our team players to “score better” on Friday night. By the time the World Cup started the field was already full of Clark students supporting their teams. It was a cold and hectic night, not only did the Latin team had to play three games in a row, but LASO was also collaborating with OIA “Noche Latina” for some sexy salsa lessons. Nevertheless everything turned out perfectly and the Latin Team won three games! As they say back home “the game runs through our blood”. Hopefully, we will win Clark World’s Cup, but everything is still to be decided as matches are still taking place and players are doing their best to be on the top of the game. My impression upon watching them play is that most of the teams have plenty of chances to win if their willing to dedicate.
Hope you had fun through my Clark Life this week! You’ll soon be hearing from me again, so stay tuned.
